History
Devona's early life was anything but stable. Her father owned a local inn, and they had problems paying the monthly rent. Because of this, sometimes her mother and father would skip out on meals and they were very conscious about spending money. Unfortunately, there were times when this wasn't enough and they would have to ask her mother's family (who belonged to the upper class) for money. When the power went out, they made it a theme: "a blast from the past" or some other rot as they would say. They were inventive with how they saved as well as advertising their little inn. Still, there had been times when they had thought about selling it and getting another job. In fact, Devona's grandfather had been offering her father a job at his company. Pride was one of the major factors from letting him take it.
Eventually, they knew things would have to change sooner or later and the day came when they found out that her mother was pregnant. A digitama had arrived through the microwave and straight into her mother's arms as she was cooking dinner. She'd screamed when she nearly microwaved the thing. Her father didn't even wait until the next day, calling them up early in the morning to tell her grandparents the news and that he was going to take them up on their offer. They ended up moving from the country side and into the city. There, Devona's mother quickly found herself immersed with the city's social life, back before she had met her husband. As for her father . . . let's just say that Devona's grandfather was riding on him. Often would he give them extra paperwork and point out "simple" mistakes in his work. Her father was no scholar nor was he the "sharpest tool in the shed." He was always made it up by doing something inventive, that no one had ever thought of. With paperwork, he just couldn't find a way. He began to drink to ease his stress.
A few months later, Devona was born . . . and her parents barely knew each other anymore. Sure, they lived better than before. With a steady income, they did not have to worry about skipping out on meals or the power going out. Instead, they would have to worry about her father's drinking (since he never came home when he wasn't sober) and how her mother was often out gossiping with the girls (meaning that she would not arrive home until late). Her father would argue that she should stay home more to take care of Devona, since he could not. She argued that they should earn enough money for a nanny, but seeing the amount of income they made, she knew they could not afford it. In the end, her mother decided to take Devona with her instead of staying home. She grew to dislike taking care of baby Devona. The act of breastfeeding in public, she found very embarrassing. As a result, this led to her staying at home more, despite the fact that her husband agreed that it was alright for her to leave. He knew that staying in the house for too long was slowly killing her mother, and eventually, he requested if he was able to cut down on his hours at work to take turns taking care of Devona.
At least they did not have to do that for too long. Soon enough (although after Devona became a toddler) her digimon, a chibomon at the time, digivolved to demiveemon. It was one of Devona's earliest memories, in fact, when she nicknamed him "Light." He assisted taking care of his partner, easing the worries of both her mother and her father. She grew up under Light's care whenever her mother decided to bring them to her friends and there was nothing fun. They treated her like a doll, dressing her up in all sorts of things. Light sensed her irritation, but her mother ignored it. It was not as if she disliked girlish things, she just hated changing her clothes as if they were nothing. She often argued with her mother, which her mother thought was common from a toddler. It wasn't until elementary school that her mother took this attitude seriously.
It was a hoot, elementary school for Devona. She loathed it. The people, she thought, were nothing but idiots who loved bothering her. There, she was teased a lot because her clothes weren't as pretty as theirs. She hated them. She hated it. So, she took her revenge. Nap time became her favorite time of day. She drew on the faces of those who had been so mean to her, played pranks on them as well as got them in trouble. If it wasn't for her partner, she would have gotten caught. To put it simply, she was a little terror. Just about all the students were either afraid of messing with her or just plain hated her by the end of her time there.
Middle school came and Devona began to relax, at least after intimidating just about everyone. Light had managed to digivolve then to Strabimon and that only helped her intimidate others. She couldn't help but smirk at that, much to her partner's distain. They had managed to scare just about everyone except for a particular little brunette. Ashling. While they might not have chatted until the middle of her first year there, Devona couldn't help watching her at a distance. There was something about her that she couldn't place. She wasn't sure if it was a good feeling or a bad one. Her partner knew. In fact, he was smirking every time he'd catch her staring at Ashling. Then came the day she spoke to Devona. She remembered it clear as day. In fact, she remembered how much of an idiot she was then. Devona had been trying to avoid her, not sure how to deal with the feeling she had, unfortunately (or maybe not), this led to bumping straight into her. She couldn't find away to avoid it. The girl was just too smart and easily weaseled her way into
For the rest of the time in middle school, she had fun. She actually enjoyed spending time there, without bothering or intimidating anyone. Then came the day they would go to high school. They would have to split up. Ashling was heading to a rather prestigious high school and Devona was just going to go to the local one. Since her family wasn't exactly "high class," there would have been only one way to get in Ashling’s high school, through her grades. Unfortunately, Devona never cared for grades or the idea of learning in school, even with Light's constant nagging. No matter what she did, she couldn't find a way into get in and Ashling couldn’t find a way out.
So, they did what they could. They spent the last few days together in school together. When summer came, she did whatever she could to find away to spend time with Ashling, although she would never know it. Devona promised that she'd find a way to see her more often.
At high school, she found that things were back to the way things were before she met Ashling. Actually, things went pretty bad. She picked a fight with the wrong crowd and ended up in some big "scandal" in her school. They ended up either shunning or turning on her. Light had warned her and begged her to tell her parents, but she was too stubborn. It wasn't until she broke her leg, sprained her arm, and earned several rib fractures that her parents learned about her school life. Soon after she was able to leave the hospital, they picked up and moved. Devona never got a chance to tell Ashling, because, being the private person she was, she kept Ashling's information in a special hidden place in her old home. If one were to add that to the fact that she was never good with numbers . . .
She never went back to the old house. It was too far from where she lived and she regretted not going back for years. Of course, it irritated her greatly and she would have gone back to her old ways if it wasn't for the fact she wasn't quite ready to go back to the hospital. She'd lost her spunk, which confused the heck out her family. Only Light understood, like he always did, and he tried to make things better by distracting her with something that caught her interest. Becoming a police. He convinced her that she'd be able to arrest jerks like the ones who actually managed to beat her up (to this day she's convinced they just jumped her) and get a pay check out of it. It was the first time she ever focused on something healthy, other than Ashling, of course ~
So, she ended up leaving home and joining the cadets.
Time went by quickly and soon enough, she was close to making it to Sergeant. In fact, she heard rumors about how she was going to be promoted soon. They were excited about it and were glad that they would be finally able to quit their second job, working as an assistant to one of the professors in the university (which was more of a chore boy, er, girl job if anything). But, that's not to say that she ever regretted taking it. If she hadn't she wouldn't have bumped into a certain someone the day she was about to send in her resignation letter (as well as a few other things the "dear" professor wanted).
Ashling. It blew her mind. She'd never thought she'd ever see her again. Of course, she pretty much dropped everything she was doing that day to chat with her. Light snuck away some time during their conversation to make sure that she wouldn’t be need for some time. They ended up telling each other what had happened over the years. Each Sunday they would meet there at the coffee shop; each time their hands touched . . . She felt as though everything was better, it didn’t matter if her week had been horrible. The moment she sat there, their hands lightly brushing at they talked. The tension went away. It was a nice feeling.
Being as naïve as she was, Devona didn’t actually realize what this feeling was. Even back then she thought it was a “normal” feeling to have around a friend that she was comfortable with. And it was nice, just relaxing, chatting about the good and the bad things (of course, she did get a “bit” worked up whenever something bad happened to Ashling). Eventually, after chatting with her partner at work, she learned that she liked Ashling, something that Light groaned about because he’d been trying to tell her that since she’d saw the delightful brunette.
It was sort of depressing because she didn’t think that Ashling felt the same at all. In fact, she couldn’t work up the courage to tell her, even with Light’s support and assurance that Ashling felt the same. Then came the day when Ashling looked rather concerned. Devona tried – the best she could, which was rather awkward – to ease it out of her and to her surprise, she found that Ashling liked her as well! Devona was quick to ask her out, not wanting anyone else to scoop her away when she wasn’t looking.
Life was great. She had the love of her life and she was gaining more recognition at her job. It changed when Ashling’s father found out about them. Seeing her love torn away from her family because of her took a toll on her, she didn’t like doing that to Ashling, even if it was unintentional or not and the fact she was never close to her own family. Anyways, after Ashling was disowned and left without a home, of course she was going to offer her a place to stay. It was the very least she could do and she had been planning it for some time, unsure of just how she should ask. They quickly got adjusted to living together. She found it rather easy, something she would have considered strange since she never really got along well with her own family.
Then came her twenty - first birthday. Boy, was she in for the surprise of her life. Ashling offered to have their child. Of course, she was delighted, but at the same time she wasn't quite sure about it. Ashling was still in college and she was climbing the ranks of the police force. Then there was the other factor, what if the boy grew up bullied because he had two mothers? What if she was a bad mother? Eventually, Ashling managed to ease her worries (not to mention she always did have a hard time saying "no" to that pretty face ~ ) and they agreed to have the child.
Devona panicked plenty of times during Ashling's pregnancy. She had no idea how to take care of a pregnant woman, and she did whatever she could to try to make it easier. Often her co-workers would comment on how she acted like a new father. Then came the day she would drive Ashling to the hospital, at first Devona had thought she was joking when Ashling mentioned that her water broke. A horrid joke at the time, she knew, but they were teasing each other at the time. Anyways, she ended up having her hand nearly crushed later as Kael earned his first few breaths.
As Devona quickly learned, having a child really cut in to their alone time. In fact, the little bugger kept crying when things were about to get "good." She would complain, of course, as a joke more than anything. As he grew older, Devona tried to find a way to ease her work so she could watch Kael as Ashling went to school.
Once Kael was able to go to school, Devona was quick to say that he should be home schooled. All she knew of school was how it was nothing but trouble, and she knew the boy would one day be picked on for having too mothers. She wanted to keep the boy as innocent as she could by doing this. But, eventually, curiosity got the better of him. He wanted to go out and go to public school. The little bugger was insistent, so she finally enrolled him in hopes that he’d quit. If not, she had already started looking for good self-defense classes for Kael. As it turned out, the boy really did have his mother’s stubbornness and kept on with his public schooling, even if he came home in cuts and bruises. She felt an odd sense of pride when Kael tried his best to defend himself, even if he’d lost.
As they grew older, the two of them had climbed higher “ranks” in their perspective jobs: Ashling as a reporter and her as member of the police force. While Devona hated the fact that Ashling would be away for so long, she let her go. She wanted Ashling to do as she always wanted and this was her dream. They’d make it work. She always planned something special when Ashling finally returned home. Then, there was that one time she did not receive her regular letter from her love. She found it strange and hoped that nothing was wrong. One of her co-workers told her to turn on the telly. On that day, she was in charge of patrol. She ended up beating up a few accused mob members, albeit a low ranking ones. They ended up in the hospital and it took plenty of persuasion to get them not to press charges against her. Devona was lucky. If the department did not recognize her talent or favor her, she might have been shamefully discharged from the force, but she did end up with a long term suspension until she got herself back together. It was on that they began to call her the “demon of greater England.”
With Ashling gone, Devona wasn’t sure how to deal with home life. Sure, Kael was there, but it wasn’t the same. She was more of the “father” figure for a reason. Emotional problems were never her thing; in fact, she wasn’t sure just how to answer and answered his questions almost like a father would. In her case, that meant more biting remarks and half-hearted sounding sympathies. She held hope though. Light had mentioned that a few of them were Americans, and if there was something good about them, it was the fact that they were always trying to rescue their own. She only hoped that Ashling would be part of those that they rescued.
Eventually, things between Kael and Devona escalated to the point where she was rarely home sober. She felt it was easier to deal with it that way and simply avoided him to go to bed. That didn’t do much good the next day when she had to work with a horrid hangover.
Soon came the day he decided to move out. She made sure to check the background of its owners and searched for anything to keep him home. Unfortunately, she couldn't find anything and reluctantly let the eager boy go. She swore that she would drop in, time to time, just to check up on him, no matter how much he hated it.
With no one home, she took up plenty of hours at her work. So much, in fact, that they were surprised to ever see her head home. The house was far too lonely without anyone there. Drinking wasn't exactly helping anymore and she couldn't deal with the hangovers. Even with Light by her side, she felt alone.
Just recently, she received the letter. The letter she had thought would never make it's way to her door. The letter that her love had been rescued. She couldn't sleep. She couldn't breathe. Just how was supposed to act when she had just about given up all hope? Even Light couldn't give her an answer to that.
Likes
- Her Family – while she might not be the best at showing it, she does care for them very, very much.
- Drinking – She’s an insanely tolerant drinker, but she rarely ever pushes the limit. At least, as long as something isn’t stressing her out badly.
- Exercise – Whenever she’s mad, she just runs until it’s gone. Well, she either runs or goes to the gym and works on the punching bag there. She loves the feeling after a good work out.
- Singing the stress away ~
- Debate – While she might not be as smart as her son, she does enjoy a good debate.
- Reading – Only anything Ashling writes or anything relevant to her, she frankly doesn't care for anything else. Plus, Kael's articles have been becoming far too difficult with all the scientific information added into it. D;
- Her job – While it might not be the funnest thing in the world at times or even see the good side in human/digimon nature, she does enjoy how satisfying it is once she is done.
Dislikes
- Smoking – Although, she does it all the time. It gets worse when she’s stressed out.
- Starting a Fight – While she may be the “demon of Greater London” she isn’t the one who usually starts a fight. At least, that’s what she says. They’re the ones who bother her first.
- Politics – Although they were part of what helped get Ashling back, she hates how most of them are corrupt and looking for money to extort. They're nothing but "pencil pushing liars" in her opinion.
- Crime – She's a cop, wha'd ya expect?
- Paperwork – Like her father, this is the only thing she can't find a way out of.
Fears
- Losing Ashling again.
- Hurting Ashling or Kael.
- Being pushed out completely from Kael’s life.

In a typical bad girl goes good story, there is always a happy ending. Unfortunately, this rule does not hold true in real life. With the capture of her love, Devona held hope that it would not last and she would come home safe and sound. At the same time, she was never one for talking, unintentionally damaging the almost non-existent relationship with her son. Years have passed since then and, with him living on his own, she has come to terms that she may live the rest of her life with only her digital partner by her side . . . But what if love were to return?
